This week's project is a snowed upon tree. We got our inspiration from The Snowy Day.
She left the bottom white, drawing a line in white oil pastel across the paper horizontally to discourage the purple and blue watercolor from spreading too far. She drew her tree in brown oil pastel and painted the sky with watercolors. Then she added salt before the watercolors dried too much. After it had dried and the salt had been dusted off, she added white glitter to the snow and to some of the branches to make the snowy parts shimmery. The salt effect and glitter gave the painting lots of texture.
Bear loved this so much she did too. She gave one to her grandfather for his birthday. I love how she includes the roots in tree drawings ever since we studied trees last spring/summer.

I love it! We just brought in some snow today, and were a little disappointed that it melted. I got this book out! Great minds think alike :) Lovely art.

ReplyDeleteHi!! Wanted to ask what type of washable paints do you use in your art activities? I'm kind of confuse whether to use poster paint, tempera paint, finger paints. My son uses watercolor a lot, but I wanted him to use other coloring paints as well. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI use Crayola Washable Tempera paint and also Coloations Simple Washable Tempera (from Discount School Supply). My only problem with the Colorations brand (I most likely won't buy it again) is that the red isn't red, it's more pink so forget any Christmas painting with that. The Crayola brand is much better wrt to the colors. Discount School supply also sells Crayola though. We used finger paints when I first introduced Bear to painting and we used Crayola brand for that too. Fingerpaints have a different texture. They don't work as well with brushes. You could finger paint with tempera too. I don't know what poster paint is but I would guess it is similar to Tempera. We have Colorations liquid watercolors which are great for certain projects too. Again, I don't like the tints of these (the liquid watercolor blue I ordered is identical to the turquoise I ordered). I like Crayola. Not sure if they have liquid watercolors though.
