By far her favorite book this week was
Christmas in the Big Woods. I love the Little House books and was delighted to find they have picture book versions. At first Bear was not interested in it, but once I started reading it, she kept asking for it over and over. It was wonderful to see how much joy the children in the book got from such simple presents such as new mittens and a peppermint stick. The illustrations really drew me in. I will be looking for more Little House picture books for Bear.
Another book Bear really enjoyed was
Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill. This is an easy reader great for emergent readers. It uses a lot of repetitive vocabulary but has an engaging story. It also uses sound words like Bump and Plop (or some such similar words) and Bear always enjoys those. The illustrations are cute. It is the story of Jack and Jill going up the hill to sled. Their dog pushes them, but the last time they go up, he refuses to push, so they push him.
Her favorite book, memorized, which she refuses to return to the library is
Don't Cut My Hair! In it this little dog doesn't want his hair cut, thinks he looks funny, and hides from his friends. Then in the end, he decides he likes his "cool new cut."

I haven't seen the Christmas in the Big Woods book yet--I loved Little House on the Prairie when I was a girl...I"ll have to look for this one!
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining this week! All three books are new to us and look very interesting. We are picking up some early readers for independent reading lately, and #2 sounds like a fun book to read.
ReplyDeleteWe just finished the Long Winter (which was very loooong), so I'm not sure the kids would be ready for more Little House, but it's always fun to walk back in time, and see how simple things were cherished in holidays past.
ReplyDeleteYou know I think I have that first book from when I was teaching, and I know I have Don't Cut My Hair. That reminds me to dig that one out, my girl would probably love it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize there were Little House picture books, I think Emma would really enjoy those. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteWe have that book, and "A Little House Birthday", which we've been reading, since C's birthday is next month. I love their simplicity!
ReplyDeleteSometimes you can find the paperbacks on sale at bookcloseouts.com - that's where I bought ours (I love that site!).
