Raising Itty Bitty Bookworms – and a Gingerbread Man project

Tara, of Raising Itty Bitty Bookworms, owns a curriculum company called Itty Bitty Bookworm and was kind enough to send me a month of her Bo’s Curriculum Year 1 for me to try out.

I am so impressed with the Bo’s curriculum.  It is thorough.  There are lists of ideas for everything (how to do circle time, what to put in centers, fine motor activities, songs to sing, etc) and for every month there are weekly lists of supplies.  You just have to scan the list and see if you have everything without having to search through the lessons.  There is nothing worse than realizing partway through a lesson that you are missing something because you accidentally skimmed that part.  I haven’t even gotten to an actual lesson plan yet, but I am already raving about it.

The learning outcomes or goals are well stated at the beginning of each month.  This is followed by an overview of each week.  This resource is full of amazing printables for your little ones, such as little alphabet books, letter clipart nursery rhymes, books for the child to color and illustrate, allowing you to save a lot of time.

Then I read a lesson and found…the lessons are very easy to follow, chock full of fun easy to do activities.

The BEST part of all though is how everything is literature-based.  You can browse the books used in the Bo’s curriculum in the first year here.   If you participate in stART, this is a curriculum you would just love.

I’ll share one example of a project Bear and I did from the Bo’s Curriculum December lessons.

We read the Gingerbread Man and then did a five senses gingerbread man book.  Well, it should have been a book, but Bear insisted I cut all the pages apart so she could “share” her gingerbread men with J-Jo, Daddy, and Mommy. (This is a printable item, but I don’t have a functional printer, so I made my own.)

CIMG0157 This one is “I can see my gingerbread man.”  Googly eyes are supposed to be there, but I didn’t have any that day, so we improvised.  Bear went crazy with the glitter glue!

CIMG0162For “I can smell my gingerbread man,” Bear glued cloves and cinnamon to her gingerbread man.

Here are the finished men.

They are taped up on a low window and Bear walks the window length repeating the lines on the back of each gingerbread man.

  1. I've really enjoyed the Itty Bitty Bookworm curriculum! I've been doing the Bailey Curriculum with my son, and he enjoys it too! So neat that you got to try it out!

  2. Everyone who tried Tara's curriculum raves about it. I would have probably purchased it, but I am being real about the time we have available for any kind of formal school and the prep needed. I still think that it must be awesome, and I am glad that Bear enjoyed it so much.

  4. Love it! I've thought a LOT about the trying out the Bailey curriculum. You'll have to keep letting me know how you like it (and, I am totally trying to fix it so that you can email me; Blogger and I are NOT getting along lately).

  5. I have seen quite a few rave reviews about Tara's curriculum. A literature based curriculum really appeals to me. The five senses gingerbread man book is such a novel idea.

I had a chuckle when I saw your felt scraps - I am the same with paper (scrapbook and textured paper) - you never know when you'll need a little strip!!

We would love to send you a postcard from Australia. We are really keen to participate in this as it is such a fun idea.

Your fairy creations are delighftul. You have done an amazing job with these.

  11. I'm really tempted to try this lately too. I looked at the sample curriculum online and was really impressed. I'm just not sure whether I'd want to try Bo or Bailey, since my son is already over 2. I'm thinking maybe I should wait a bit and do Bo?
