We've been working a lot with number patterns on the hundred board. I will get her to do two rows of the board (so to 20) and then give her 35 and ask her to find where it goes using pattern clues. She's getting good at this. We're also doing word problems in addition and subtraction. I do these word problems with her on the way to school and she draws it out on her drawing pad. "Bear has 6 cookies and Mommy gives her two more. How many does Bear have now?" Pause while she works out the answer - 8. "Now Bear eats 4. How may does she have left?" It's a good way to use time in the car. She also reads to me from her school readers in the car.
Since all the trees are blooming, I brought out our flower three part cards (you can find them here to download) and she matched them up. We've been reading some Spring books and revisiting some of the flower books we read last year. It never hurts to review.
Bear's big love is Little House on the Prairie and I feel badly that none of her peers can relate to her. I feel I've harmed her in some way because all her friends talk about princesses and she just wants a bonnet and pinafore to be Laura (or Rose - Laura's daughter). She accomplishes this with scarves, as seen in the photo (bottom left corner).
Her other big love is writing and making cards. I talked about this in our card writing basket post.
I've stopped with learning units for now because with three full school days, it was too much. We still haven't even finished our geology unit.

Oh, Bear and Anna would love playing together. Anna is not into Princesses either, and she loved to play Little House when we were listening to it. I think review is extremely important, because our children learn so much every day and sometimes, just as with us, something they used to know is buried deep in memory and not readily accessible.
ReplyDeleteI don't know where you live, but there is a Laura Ingalls Wilder vacation spot in De Smet, South Dakota. My friend took her girls there; they have clothes so you can dress the part, a school room, a cabin, horse drawn carriages, ect. Bear would probably like it if she loves the books :)

ReplyDeleteBear and Bunny would have fun together! Playing is the smae here. Pull out a crown and no ones touches it, pull out a sunbonnet and she will wear it all day!!!! None of Bunny's friends understand it either!

ReplyDeleteI know how you feel. K goes off on her imagination with wizards and witches and her playmates are scratching their heads or go off running because they are scared. Good days are when they play along.

ReplyDeleteWe do a lot of counting these days too - in the car, or like today, we simply counted the steps from outside the museum to the car. She counted - it was 104 steps.
I also love that Bear is into Little House on the Prairie - unfortunately for us, my daughter is very much into the princess fantasy world - I would love to introduce her to Little House on the Prairie (I was under the impression it was for ages 8+)? Is that not the case? Do tell...
@The Art of Family. I'm sorry about the photos. I was trying to save space in my Picasa Web. I keep running out of room and then deleting other, non blog related photos in there to make more space. I'm resizing the photos now and hoping that will help and I thought a collage would also help. I will avoid them in the future:)
ReplyDeleteAs for Little House, I don't know how much she soaks in, but she loves the books. In terms of subject matter, I think they are appropriate for as young as 3 or 3.5 depending on your child's nature. I started by reading her all the Little House Picture books and since she loved those, I thought, why not try the chapter books. Obviously she loves them and when she found out there were books about Laura's daughter she asked for them too.
