Artists and Art - Georgia O'Keeffe

Spring came for about two weeks and has left us again.  However, it did leave a bunch of flowers in bloom, daffodils, crocuses and camellias, magnolias, and those horrid smelling pear blossoms.  I always think of Georgia O'Keeffe in Spring.

We found lots of picture books for Georgia O'Keeffe at the library:

and the Mike Venezia book, Georgia O'Keeffe
(which we use more for looking at than reading).

We noticed that most of Georgia's flowers are magnified.
We talked about how she painted from observation.

We picked a camellia from our bush and Bear "observed" as she drew a practice flower.
Then I taped down a large piece of watercolor paper and she drew her flower on it.  She didn't magnify enough (it's a hard idea at this age) so she added a second flower.
Using red Colorations liquid watercolor, she painted the flowers, first wetting the paper.
With her permission, after it dried, I went over some of her lines with a red crayon so we could see the fantastic detail she did inside the flower.  (I have yet to finish the flower on the right.)

  4. Bear's painting is beautiful! We're a LONG ways from having flowers of any kind around here - no grass even in sight, and more snow due tonight...

  5. We've found the last book at the library. I need to find a dry flower as it will be raining all week. I always loved her work.
