Classical Conversations - Helping and Linking Verbs

Grammar in Cycle 1 focuses on prepositions, helping verbs and linking verbs.  I covered our plan of attack for prepositions in this previous post.  Today's post shares resources I plan on using to teach Bear about helping and linking verbs.  She already has a firm grasp of action verbs from First Language Lessons .

Helping Verbs:
Here is a page to learn the helping verbs through a story about Mr. Do.  Here's a Mom who used this with her daughter.

And a video:

Linking Verbs:

A video giving a good tip as to how to find the linking verbs in the sentence. Bear can read the text in this video, but some children may need it to be read to them.  It is put to classical music, but the text is not spoken, which is too bad.  But I suppose that normally, nonreaders would not be trying to find linking verbs in a sentence. lol.

Here is a free linking verb/action verb sort.

Linking verb worksheets: one, two three.
This site has a lot of different grammar sheets, including helping and linking verbs.
More grammar worksheets.

A fun game for learning the helping and linking verbs is the following, found on this Squidoo lens:

1. Make a set of cards, half with nouns and half with verbs.
2. Form a circle.
3. Shuffle the cards in the middle.
4. Each child pulls out a card and reads it to himself.
5. If you have a noun, stay seated.
6. If you have a verb, stand and weave around the circle until the music stops.
7. When the music stops. Join hands with the nearest seated person.

This would be a good game to play in class with more than one child.

A Verbs Dice game I found on Amazon.  I have no idea what the rules are, but I like the idea of putting verbs on a dice.  Perhaps I would put action, helping, and linking verbs on dice and assign different points per type of action verb.
