Books This Week

At The Edge of the Woods - A Counting Book by Cynthia Cotten had lovely crisp illustrations.  The vocabulary and use of adjectives was refreshing.  I love exposing Bear to new vocabulary, especially more sophisticated vocabulary.

excerpt: "At the edge of the woods, a big burly bear lumbers out of his cozy lair into the meadow to get some air...."

What's Alive (let's read and find out science) by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld did a nice job of explaining living versus nonliving.  However, Bear knew this already (how does she already know things we've never talked about?) and rolled her two year old eyes at me whenever I asked her to tell me if something was living or nonliving.

Duck by Randy Cecil had sweet illustrations.  The story was about a wooden duck who wants to fly and can't until he meets a special little duckling who helps him.
Wake Up Spring by Lisa Campbell Ernst is a very cute book, good for sequencing. The sun warms the earth and wakes the earthworm who wakes the seed, who wakes the ladybug...the rabbit, cardinal, cat, dog, baby, brother, sister, and then the parents (one eye at a time) and they all go out to dance in the sun.

  1. It's funny that you mentioned Bear knowing the difference between living and non-living. I think it's intuitive for most kids/people. But what I was surprised was how well the book dealt with things like how dead things are considered living because they used to live. You can make this as complicated as you want by throwing in some unexpected examples.

  2. Ha! Leave it to a 2 yr old to shock you with their intellect:)

I like the progressive story in Wake Up, It's Spring too!

I'll have to check out your montessori posts. Now that my B is 2 I'm looking into my options more.

  3. We haven't read any of the books on your list. The story of living/non-living amused me - Anna sometimes reacts to my attempts to "test" her knowledge in exactly same way. In fact, she can intentionally give wrong answers and giggle - a sure sign for me that it's time to change topics :)

  4. Looks like some great picks this week! I'm especially interested in "What's Alive." That looks like a great science book!

Thanks for linking up to Read Aloud Thursday!
