Seeds! Seeds! Seeds!

I love Nancy Elizabeth Wallace's cut paper illustrations.  Seeds! Seeds! Seeds! is not the only book of hers we have read.  Bear enjoys her books as much as I do.  I found this one at our library and it fit in perfectly with our flowers and seeds science.

The little bear in the story receives 5 packages from his grandfather.  Five packages with five seed activities for him to do.  We followed along and did some of the same activities presented in the book.

First, Bear made her own seed collection.
Here's a closer look.
We planted our seeds outside.
We sequenced our seed germination cards.  I couldn't find any I liked online, but loved Nancy Elizabeth Wallace's illustrated ones in the book.  I took photos of each illustration, printed them on cardstock and cut them out for Bear to sequence.

We put bird seed out for the birds.

The only thing we didn't do was make a collage with our seeds.  We would have, but I didn't have any white glue in the house.

Lastly, I also made Bear three part cards of the plant to match the seeds in her seed collection.  You can download these cards here:
The photos are from the Flickr Creative Commons; I typed whose photostream the photos came from at the bottom of each page.

  1. We also love this book! We recently did a fun activity that I thought of when we were reading it:

I should upload new photos, actually, because the jars are now literally full of roots (and ready to be replanted). It looks really cool.

  2. I'm thinking we're going to do a plant activity here as well this afternoon or morning.
One activity my kids loved, and Princess still loves is sorting seeds. I bought a bunch of packages of some of the bigger seeds and let them sort them out (corn, sunflower, peas, pumpkin, so on and so forth)

  3. It looks like such a clever activity. I hope that something will grow out of your seeds. The illustration style looks familiar - I am pretty sure that we also read something by this author.

  6. Very nice activities! I really like the seed collection. I might try that with the kids when we get closer to our planting time.

  7. Oh, I'm so glad you found Read Aloud Thursday!

This is a great post! I think we've read that book, but you carried it far further than we ever have. What a great activity!

I'm looking forward to next week! :-)

  8. These are great activities to go along with the book! I think we might have some leftover seeds, although we've already done all our planting. I may see about doing something like this too.

  9. We just planted flowers this week and this would be the perfect book to help her understand. Thanks for linking up at Feed Me books Friday!
