Before Christmas I won a great DVD by Whistlefritz called Adentro y Afuera. I was reluctant to put it on as it is labeled as "Spanish for Beginners" and Bear, being in a Spanish environment all day long, is hardly a beginner.
Well, we were all thoroughly impressed by this DVD. I would say if you have a toddler/preschooler, even if you speak Spanish all day long to her, this DVD is still worthy of being shown. It is a great DVD for those who speak no Spanish as well. The Spanish is spoken clearly and slowly and there are lots of visuals to help you learn the words and understand what is being said and sung.
The website sums it up superbly by saying, "These Spanish immersion DVDs and CDs for kids have it all: live action, animation, engaging dialogue, lovable puppets, hummable tunes, and tons of hilarious fun. Our Spanish DVDs and CDs will have your child speaking, thinking, and singing along in Spanish in no time!"
I couldn't have said it better. Bear was captivated from the start as the host Maria searches all through the house for her little animated mouse named Fritzi. This particular DVD taught the names of rooms in the house and things you might find in each room. It is very interactive as Maria speaks to the viewer, asking questions like "what do you think Fritzi is doing in the bathroom?" (in Spanish of course). The children sing upbeat fun songs that are full of actions and Bear loves to dance every time we put this on. The skits are totally funny and make her giggle, such as when Maria is counting the cookies and the children, one on either side of her, are sneaking them into their mouths.
Bear would watch it all day if I let her.
I'm not surprised at all the awards it has won.
The best part is that Bear is now spontaneously spouting Spanish words throughout day, something she was not doing before despite us insisting she repeat her English sentences in Spanish. She sings along to the songs and acts out the scenes as she is watching the DVD. Even my husband and I get into it and dance with her. And J-jo? Well, he loves it too:) He would sit there mesmerized, but I usually dance with him with his back to the screen. (What can I say, I'm one of those "no-tv-before-you-are-at-least-one-years-old" fanatics!)
Disclosure: I won this DVD but was not asked to review it. I am reviewing it for the sole benefit of my readers who may be looking for Spanish resources for their children. I enjoy watching this with my daughter and dancing with her as we watch it and thought others might too:)

Hey! I follow your blog... but I cannot name anything that I like for teaching a second language because we haven't used anything other than the Spanish audio option on our dvds. I wish RockerTot could grow up in a dual language environment.
ReplyDeleteI am a subscriber to your blog. I just love all the neat stuff you do with Bear. The only resource i have for a 2nd language is a friend who speaks spanish. I haven't found a program I really like. Any suggestions?

I am definitely a follower of your blog! We are raising our daughter in a bilingual environment but since we live in an English speaking country, English is definitely the dominant language. My husband speaks to her exclusively in Spanish but he has been noticing that most of her words are English. We let her watch an episode of Dora the Explorer a day, but that is still mostly English with a few Spanish words mixed in. We would really LOVE this DVD!
ReplyDeleteI posted about this giveaway on my blog:

I have put labels on things around the house. It's a start but I have been waiting until I felt my daughter wouldn't confuse the different sounds for the alphabet with English. I have a bog that I've been practicing with. It's a work in progress and I don't think anyone reads it, but I've posted your site on there anyway. http://rebeccahargett.blogspot.com/I've been a subscriber for a while now. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog...as far as resources, we aren't doing to well although my husband is fluent in spanish. I haven't given up yet though.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower for sure:) And the only material I have are a few children's books written in Spanish.
ReplyDeleteHi! I do follow your blog and Love it.
ReplyDeleteWe speak Spanish at home and also read Spanish books. But this sounds like a lot of fun.
I have blogged about this post as well. :)
ReplyDeleteHello! I follow your blog and have been marking projects left and right to tackle with my littles. My husband is fluent in Spanish, and although he speaks to our kiddos in Spanish, we haven't started anything to rigorous - this might be a fun way! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm a subscriber. I speak Spanish to my son (3 years old)and that is his main language (although we live in Italy). My husband speaks English to him and he mainly watches DVDs in English, in spite of all he speaks very little english (only words no sentences). The most helpful resource has been visitng relatives who only speak english.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog!
ReplyDeleteI like the Muzzy program, but it's way out of our budget. We borrow it from the library when we can...
I am a follower!!! I have always been curious about this product. I do not use many Spanish language teaching tools since we speak Spanish ourselves. I do love a video called Moving Pictures that comes in English and Spanish. I will blog about your giveaway this weekend and come back to leave a message.
ReplyDeleteI'm a subscriber. I want to teach my daughter Spanish, but don't speak it well myself. We are slowly learning together. This would be a great resource!
ReplyDeleteI'm following your blog. I would love these since we don't have much for teaching Spanish but some books & my kids love Dora and Diego :).
