Typical of Roald Dahl, this book is very exaggerated. I'm not sure I liked it through the lens of a parent because of some of the word choices (stupid, hag, shut up), but I just changed those to more "appropriate-for-us" words as I read aloud. I can see its appeal through the lens of a child however. I remember really enjoyed other Roald Dahl books as a child.
I think we're going to try The Boxcar Children next.

The Boxcar children are great! I actually have them on hold at the library!
ReplyDeleteReading is so FUN! My 4 year old loves our cuddle/reading time and always tells me it is her favorite part of the day!

My daughter's first novel (at around 2.5) was "My Father's Dragon". She loved it and still talks about it!
ReplyDeleteAtira's first unabridged novel was Charlotte's Web. (I love E.B. White) We just finished the Trumpet of the Swan and the Boxcar Children! Bear will love it. We are on #2 Surprise Island in the Boxcar series. Atira keeps asking when we are going to get to the mystery. hehe.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining WMCIR! Word replacements wouldn't have worked for us, but I am thinking of starting Little House read-alouds here. It's great that Bear enjoyed her first novel, it sure will be one of the very many :)
