Bear's Magic Head

Bear: Mommy, do you have a magic head that lets you hear things?

Me: Umm.  What do you mean, "let's you hear things"?

Bear: Like in the book.  I can hear the words.  I just turn on my magic head (she puts her hand under her hair by the nape of her head and pushes) right here and then I can hear the book in my head.  Can you do that?

Me: (Smiling) Yes! You mean silent reading. Reading in your head.  I can do that.  You can do that?

Bear: Yes, Mommy.  Of course.  I have a magic head.

Later....

Bear: Mommy, I need to turn my magic head off when I'm not using it or it might run out of batteries.

I love it when she comes up with these really neat ways to describe things.  I was unaware that she had figured out how to read silently.  Apparently she's been doing that for a while now. And I never even realized:)

  1. That is so cool. I'm not sure when K began reading silently but no mention of things like the magic head yet.

  3. HA! She is too funny! I love the running out of batteries part! Often when my children's toys stop working, this is what I always tell them - and they are bummed we don't have new batteries to replace. So cute! And of course, LOVE how the words being read in her hand - is magic for her :) Great moment indeed!

  4. That is so sweet! For some reason, I remember making that discovery myself when I was a child. She described it so well! Thanks for sharing!

  5. How fun. It was pretty interesting when Anna switched to silent reading. Now it's hard to get her to read aloud because she speeds up so much. Great picture too.

  6. Oh that is so sweet! She's intuitive. My youngest is now nine and it's so easy to forget these times, thank you for reminding me. I wish there was blogging back then too for digital recording.
