It looks so simple, yet the kids are drawn to play in it for long periods of time. I have a spoon and containers next to the box and they are often sorting the rocks into sizes as well as texture. Bear also likes to sort "rocks I like and rocks J-jo can have." J-jo likes to attempt to pour the small ones.
Note: J-jo is always well supervised when he plays with this box. Please be careful if you have toddlers still in the mouthing stage.
I love the natural, simplicity of this; I can see why the kids are drawn to it.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. My son LOVES rocks, and he likes to go to our rock filled walkway outside and choose rocks to "give" to each member of our family. He'd stay there for hours. I love the idea of sensory boxes, but my son still requires me to sit with him and play structured games with them (hide items, find items, tell him what he should do next, etc.) so it doesn't give me any kind of break. Just a rice-filled floor! I like the rocks because they seem less messy than rice, at least.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! And I have a front yard full of landscaping rocks we need to get rid of!
ReplyDeleteI am definitely creating a rock sensory box for JR & Ash. They LOVE picking up rocks when we are on walks.
