We Play - Boxcar Children

In the middle of July, I read Bear the first two books on the Boxcar Children series.  For the whole two weeks we spent reading those two books, Bear, J-jo and I played a lot at being the Boxcar Children.  Of course, I was Jessie (and sometimes Henry) and Bear was Violet (though sometimes Jessie) and J-jo was supposed to be Benny.

Here's the Boxcar.
Here's the refrigerator (the children stored their milk bottles behind a little waterfall in the brook in the first story).
In one of the chapters in the first book, the children build a dam to have a bathing pool.  Here Bear is building our bathing pool.
In the second book, the children are on an island all summer and there is a dock and the sea.  This is our representation of that.

We played at this every day.  It was so much fun.  What books have you acted out with your children?

Come over and play at the Childhood 101 We Play link up

  3. This is a lot of fun. Anna plays a lot of Little House in the Big Woods lately - usually it involves either shooting bears or making sure wild animals cannot get in.

  4. Oh my goodness, I loved the first Boxcar Children book when I was a little girl. But I kind of lost interest in some of the other books in the series after they started living with their grandfather (I think it was their grandfather...its been a long time since I read it). After I read that book, I used to have long elaborate fantasies about making a house out in the wild (like a treehouse or a cave) and finding all of my dishes. Love your pretend play.

  5. How fun! I should do this more with my son. In fact, I can hardly think of any examples of us doing it. I'll have to try to think of a fun, easy one to introduce the idea. Maybe I'll put the idea into one of his "learning boxes" for next week. Thanks for the idea. :)

  6. I don't think I know of the Boxcar Children, so I am going to have to have a look for them now. It certainly looks like there is plenty in the stories for you to play with!

  7. This play looks like fun and I love how you did it each day. We've acted out 'I Love My Mummy' by Giles Andreae and 'Where's My Teddy?' by Jez Alborough. Just keeping it simple at this stage.

  8. How wonderful! We all love Boxcar Children. Children love to live out their favourite stories and you certainly have created moments that will last forever in their minds!
