Storm in the Night

We read Storm in the Night by Mary Stolz.  It's a Five In a Row book.  Although I am not using the FIAR volume 1 book as a curriculum, I am finding it is enriching our reading of picture books.  I found I accidentally discussed what should have been five days worth of stuff all in one sitting.  Also, Bear didn't care for this book much (probably because of her fear of storms) and didn't want to listen to it more than once (although I did manage to convince her that we should read it at least twice).
After looking at the illustrations and discussing how the artist showed light by using white and yellow hues on top of the dark colors, we went to do our own painting of a stormy cloud, experimenting with adding white or black to blue.

We also experimented with brush strokes and brush tips to create rain.

  1. Great art! We haven't read that book. I'll have to check it out and see what my kids think of it.

  2. Nice craft - I so doubt that Anna would agree to do a craft based on the book she didn't like though :)

  3. I love the paintings! How wonderful that you discussed how to achieve the effect (which I wouldn't have known!).

  6. Mary Stolz is one of my favorite childrens book authors but it has been a long time since I read this. I am not even sure if I have read it to my kids.
The stormy cloud painting is a great idea and looks good.

  7. I love the project. I have decided to do stART projects based on the illustrations rather than the text.
