We read Magic Tree House #3 Mummies in the Morning.
As part of our study of ancient Egypt...
We read about Exodus in our children's Bible.
We built pyramid out of blocks
and made a sledge using her cylinder unit blocks under a basket of books to illustrate how the Egyptians moved the enormous stones from the quarries to the pyramid.
We made Egyptian bracelets from toilet paper tubes (actually it was a paper towel one), paint and stickers.
I had Bear look at the printable pyramid outline and predict if both cutouts would make the same pyramid. Then I taped them together and showed her that indeed they do both make pyramids.
Here's what never got done:
I had Bear look at the printable pyramid outline and predict if both cutouts would make the same pyramid. Then I taped them together and showed her that indeed they do both make pyramids.
Here's what never got done:
- a model of the Nile River (idea from Everyday Homeschool).
- a science experiment about how best to mummify an apple.
- this Egyptian game for us to play.
For background information this info about Egyptian tools was interesting (for me, not for Bear) and there was an excellent explanation of the mummification process that allows you to go through it interactively. Not for every child - I certainly did not show it to Bear. Look at it alone first before showing your child. Really cool though.

Great activities! I wish we synchronized our MTH units so we can learn from one another but JC likes to read the books too much so we're kind of speeding through them! I might have her read it again when she's older so she can do these projects on her own...that is, if she is still interested in them later.
ReplyDeleteI've almost tried reading a MTH book to my kids a couple of times, but haven't been able to time finding the right one with our studies. Maybe I'll look to see if they have an Ancient Greece one.
ReplyDeleteGreat Egyptian unit. I especially liked your rolling experiment. Anna was not too interested in Egypt in our latest passthrough - she is still terrified of mummies. I hope that we will eventually revisit Egypt when she is a bit older.
ReplyDeleteIve been wanting to find some good preschool geography lessons/ideas and haven t had an easy time with this. This post is great! Can i ask where you get your ideas and if you use certain websites or books??
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting about the Egyptian activities that you didn't get to! My 13 year old is doing an in-depth unit study of Ancient Egypt. The mummification computer module and experiment to mummify the apple would be GREAT projects for him that he would enjoy. I will add them to our lesson plans in the next two weeks. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful preschool Ancient Egypt activities!
ReplyDeleteFun! We did the Nile River model years ago... my kids still remember it.
ReplyDeleteThese activities look great.
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about doing MTH unit studies for awhile. Even planned one but have never implemented it. Need to do that! :-)
What great activities!!!
ReplyDeleteLove that you put in what never got done. My wrap-ups would be much longer with that in there! ;)
