Or How the Pink Tower and Brown Stair Inspired Math Today
Our pink tower and brown stair arrived in the mail (ordered more for J-jo when he's ready than for Bear). We had fun doing some of the extensions.
(Bear has been very taken by photography lately. So much so that when her brother climbed into his chair by himself she cried out, "Don't move! I have to take a picture!" and took off running for her camera. She sounds just like I do when I want to take a photo for the blog.
Rolling beads down the stair. They made such a beautiful and captivating musical sound, like rain falling. Bear rolled them down the stair over and over and over.
We built a very long snake (notice the camera in her hands).
We measured it with nonstandard units (mommy + Bear). The snake was longer than the two of us put together.
Then we measured it in centimeters.
Then we built our number with the tiles.
If you don't have a pink tower and brown stair, you can just use any old blocks to build a snake and then measure that.
What a fun extension of the pink tower and brown stair! I love the non standard measurement picture :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing :-)
ReplyDeleteI love math manipulatives that double as building blocks. Anna is just now getting more into photography, unfortunately her favorite subject is floor.
ReplyDeleteSo cute about the camera. My son loves using the camera lately too (we gave him a very old digital one and he takes it hiking with his Dad and takes photos). I've actually been thinking about doing a photography assignment sort of thing for him, instructing him to go around the house and take photos of blue things or round things or... ? I saw something similar on a blog (of course I forget where. If it was your blog, I'll laugh) for an older child.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had tons of fun!
ReplyDeleteMontessori materials are so beautiful! I love your description of rain falling. I also love all the pics of Bear with the camera. I gave JC a camera when she was younger and she would take pics. of our legs. We had to bend down to get our faces in! Lol
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE the pink tower and brown stair. My older daughter (almost 5) still uses this work and creates all kinds of fun extensions.
ReplyDeleteI love that you measured yourselves beside the long snake!
Thanks for all your wonderful ideas and your great blog! Thanks for taking the time to link-up on Mondays Montessori Moment!
