The Universe - Day 2, 3, 4, and 5

After our first day of "planet work"...

We continued to sing the Family of the Sun every day. Ever time we sing the song, we take her planet cards (you may have to refresh the screen after you click on the link) and put them in order.

We also sing a song to the tune of "Ten Little Indians".
"Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.  Those are all of the planets.  There are eight in all."

Bear made another solar system poster, this time using planets she had water colored.
I drew the orbits around the sun (but they didn't show up in the photograph) and she glued the planets to the correct orbit lines.  We talked about how in space, there weren't really any lines drawn out, but that the planets revolved as if there were lines drawn there.

We sang another song I read about at My Montessori Journey.
The tune of the song is "The Farmer in the Dell." The words are:
"The earth turns around, the earth turns around.  Once a day, every day, the earth turns around."
"The moon goes 'round the earth, the moon goes 'round the earth.  Once a month, every month, the moon goes round the earth."
"The earth goes 'round the sun, the earth goes 'round the sun.  Once a year, every year, the earth goes 'round the sun."
We acted out the song.  Bear was the earth, I was the moon, and Daddy was the sun.
We read the book The Moon Might be Milk and Bear made the moon cookies from the story with my mom who is visiting.  They were really good!
Another great book for this unit was Every Planet Has a Place.
It had brief text, (perfect for a preschooler) a fun mix of photographs and graphics, and it made me totally appreciate just how tiny we are - Earth's just a speck of flour in the great big bowl of the universe!

  1. I'm going to be so bad when I teach about the planets, I'll really want to say Pluto is a planet, and that really won't help......
Love the songs you linked too, those are so helpful.

  2. Love the planets poster! We got in a tiny bit of space this week, - but we're hoping to do more later...

  3. Wow, you really went "all in" on the planet unit. We had several "spirals" on Universe topics, but we didn't go into this depth yet. Maybe next year.
