We've been working on odd and even numbers (more on that in another post) and every time I cut fruit for Bear, we count the pieces and determine if each piece has a friend. Here we counted the halves and Bear informed me we had one odd half. I confirmed that indeed we had an odd number of halves.
We also talked about quarters and whole. Bear is not new to the idea of fractions. She has been playing with the fraction puzzle pictured below since she was 24 months. She begs for it frequently.
So when asked to point to the quarters, halves and wholes, Bear did so easily.

I am missing your posts - you always have great ideas about math. Come back soon :)
ReplyDeleteHow cool that Bear is figuring out fractions so quickly - I like your fruit activity, also!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you cut the apples because that's the way we cut it for JC. She tends to eat more of the peel when we cut it thinly sliced.
ReplyDeleteBear is very advanced for her age! Bear and JC would get along. ;) I had a math game on my iphone which had a bit of fractions thrown in. First, she used to ask me which fractions the monster wanted to eat but after several tries, she figured it out by herself. I was amazed. I always thought fractions should be taught later in elementary school but when it's made into a game or used in real life, the connections are made without much effort!
I love the fraction puzzles you posted. I'm going to do some egg in the egg carton activities now. We also have fraction pies she plays with but haven't thought of teaching it.
Thanks for linking your activity and sharing it with us!
Have you ever thought of the idea of having a gifted child? She's way too brilliant.
