The other day I was cleaning out our recyclables cupboard (where we keep empty jars and lids and styrofoam trays because you just never know when these will be needed) and I noticed a hefty pile of baby food jar lids. Seventy-five lids to be exact!
With my bff the Sharpie marker, and Bear sitting next to me, I numbered the inside of each lid and put them in a plastic box. Of course, Bear had to go get her own lids and write her numbers on her lids too!
So the next time J-jo was nursing (and subsequent times thereafter) I had Bear run to the box, which I placed at the other end of the room, and choose a lid. She brought back the lid and I read her the number if it was one she didn't already know (i.e. not 1 through 12).
This is a great way to practice larger number recognition and to sneak in a little bit of physical activity too! This could also work as a way to keep a LO entertained while cooking.
Great idea!
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea, but it cracked me up that you saved 75 baby food lids. Moving will be fun :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I'll have to keep this is mind as I will be facing a similar challenge later this year (nursing another one). My son loves to play with numbers like that. He also loves when I take his numbers and move them around to form three digit numbers and read them to him. He only knows that three digits means "hundeds! hunded big number!" but it is a start. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI too saved baby jar lids. They're great for making games because it's easier for the kids to pick up and manipulate than a piece of card stock.
