What Bear is Reading



Bear has been really into Jan Brett lately.

We read (and continue to read)


This is Bear's favorite.This one is my least favorite one to read aloud, but the story itself is kind of funny and cute.

This one is neat in that it differed from the plot of The Umbrella and The Mitten
We love this one as its setting is a Cloud Forest and we have one about 6 hours away that we would like to go visit once Baby Boy is a bit older.
I love how you can see the clothes dwindle on the clothesline at the top of each page as the story goes on.

Why I recommend Jan Brett
  • the richness of the illustrations - there are so many things to look at and stories on the sides of the main illustrations.
  • the vocabulary - it is a great way to introduce words like "investigate" and "lumbered". I love words and hope Bear will too. I love explaining these "big" words to her. And she enjoys learning them as she tries to say them at later times during the day.
  • the amazing free resources she has available on her website.
However, her books are long and not all toddlers can sit through them. For some unknown reason, Bear can actually sit through the entire litany of books just listed above in one sitting, and then beg me to read The Hat, The Mitten, and The Umbrella (her favorites) a second time!

    I love Jan Brett books as well, for all of the reasons you listed. Did you know on the side pictures of the mittens you can follow what the little boy is doing, and you can see what animal will appear next?
    She has so many fabulous details in her books.

    Great roundup of Jan Brett books! She has such beautiful illustrations. We have The 12 Days of Christmas and also The Mitten. I think I stashed The Mitten with our other holiday books, but I'm really looking forward to reading it with The Littlest Apple now that he's old enough to appreciate it.

    I will have to see if our library has any of these books and see if they would be something Selena would enjoy. They sound like good books, but she isn't one for real long storys yet unless they really catch her interest.

    We are fans of Jan Brett, one of our favorite books that she illustrated is "St. Patrick's Day in the Morning" by Eve Bunting.

    We did a Book review on it earlier this year.

    I don't think we've ever read Jan Brett books so we'll definitely have to check them out. M will sit for long books, so she just might like these.

    Jan Brett is one of my very favorite authors. I love her website, too. I have used it quite a bit as a teacher and as a mom.

    I love the illustrations in Jan Brett's books. Emma is like Bear - she can sit through several of these stories even though she typically does not enjoy wordy books. Maybe it's the richness of the illustrations?
