Gallo Pinto

photo from wikimedia open source

Costa Ricans are famous for their breakfasts.
You won't find waffles or pancakes on the table here.
Rather, you'll encounter
eggs, toast, and
most definitely
rice and beans.
The dish is called gallo pinto
and is made of rice, beans, cilantro, onion, a bit of red pepper,
and of course the special Lizano sauce.

In our house we like to eat gallo pinto for lunch
but everyone laughs at us for this.
Because everyone knows that gallo pinto is only for breakfast!

  1. I've wondered for years what "gallo pinto" was - now I know. Thanks!

  2. That looks delicioso! Do you eat "menudo" in Costa Rica? It is a favorite breakfast in Mexico and I think it is just horrible!

  3. It's interesting how different cultures eat different breakfasts. When I was living in France, typical breakfast outside the house was coffee and croissant. I visited Israel many times, and I just love their breakfasts - with many different salads, cheeses and salted fish. I have never heard of gallo pinto before - it's fun to learn about another way to have breakfast.
