There is so much coordination needed. They have to hold the paper, hold the scissors correctly, try to open their little hands, slide the paper through. Whew! What an overwhelming task!
It is so important to set up our little ones for success.
Bear has taken to wanting to cut things out of magazines ALL the time.
It's hard.
So sometimes Mommy helps by holding the page a bit.
But sometimes she doesn't need me to.
I found that one thing that really helps
is to draw a box around what she wants to cut.
It guides her eye to where she should line up the scissors
and she has fewer heads cut in half.

Thanks for this tip - Johnny is dying to use scissors all by himself, and I need all the tips I can get to help him learn to use them correctly.
ReplyDeleteWhoa, those are big scissors! We tried plastic Melissa and Doug scissors first, but they never worked for Anna. So now I bought her Westcott with blunt tips, and it works so much better. Still, Anna can only cut for a few minutes before she is tired and done.
ReplyDeleteM loves cutting. It's got to be in his top 5 favorite activities. I draw lines for him too, and sometimes use stickers to help guide him. He has much smaller scissors than those though - I don't think he would be able to do much with them! And magazines are hard to cut! Cardstock or construction paper is a little easier. There are some good cutting practice pages online if you do a search. Looks like she is doing pretty good!!
