We Play - Shopping

>> Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Playing shopping is such a great learning experience.  It is a great lesson in money, coin values, making change, not buying more than you can afford, people skills (saying good afternoon and thank you and have a nice day to the cashier).  We used to play market day a lot in Costa Rica.  We played with colones and Bear had learned the difference between some of the coins there.  Now she's learning a whole new set of coins.  American ones.  She loves the calculator on the cash register she received as an early birthday gift.  When you ask her how much something is, she looks at the numbers and tells you one and presses it.  I showed her how to press the plus sign to add the numbers.

Come over and play at the Childhood 101 We Play link up

We have that same cash register. I hope to play shopping a lot this summer because I want my kids to learn more about money.

We have the same cash register. Playing shopping is a fun way to learn math without even realizing that you are learning.

All the kids who come over to play are always all over that cash register! I hope ours last so we can play more shopping experiences in the future. I still need to organize some fruits and veggies (and a scale) to incorporate into our shopping experiences. So much fun!

I'm anticipating the kids being all into it at playgroup and am planning on taking out the play money from inside to allow it to last us longer:) If I get around to it, I'll cut some paper the right size to use as bills and they can use flat marbles as coins.
