Skip Counting by Tens

>> Wednesday, April 7, 2010

An easy way to demonstrate skip counting is with an empty egg carton or ice cube tray and counters. We used buttons of different colors (10 buttons of each color) since we had just read the book Bunches of Buttons by Michael Dahl.

We first counted out the 100 buttons, putting the buttons into groups of ten as we counted. We did this as we read the book.  Then, as we placed each group into a separate cup of the egg carton, we counted by tens:10, 20, 30...100.

You could easily do the same thing for counting by 2s, 3s, 5s....

We did this with pennies but I may try again with buttons. She will like the buttons a lot more.

This is a colorful way to count by 10. We tried something similar, but Anna gets bored quickly with sorting. Maybe I have to bite the bullet and do all the work after all instead of hoping that she will count out 10 groups of 10.

Diego still has trouble with numbers over 20 but I will file this away for later. Hope everything is good with you guys!

Nice button activities.
We have done some work with buttons, too. Will have to try yours the next time we have buttons out on our shelves.
