Bird Beaks

>> Sunday, April 25, 2010

We've been reading about birds and watching birds in our yard a lot lately.
Today we pretended to be birds and ate our snack using "beaks"

Here's a little sparrow beak.
Here's a duck bill.
Here's a big beak.

We then tried this again with beans.  I couldn't get my sparrow's beak to pick up anything.
But bear did!

What a great hands on learning for different mouth styles. I remember doing a similar one in college and trying to pick up different things. Trying rubber bands with chop sticks is an interesting challenge.

I'm so glad you are posting! I get so excited when I read your posts and want to try out everything with L. We're also learning about different types of birds at the moment so we are so going to try the beak thing.
I also love how you list all of the books you are reading. I look them up at our local library but sadly they don't have many of them in stock.
Hope everything is coming along with the unpacking.

This is fabulous because we can do the beak thing with dinosaurs! I'm going to see if we can squeeze this activity in this week. Can't pass up such simple and fun activity!

How about a little math and see which beak can pick up the most beans!

Great idea. I have a hunch that Anna would love it a lot. I can imagine her delighting in the mess she will be making. Definitely an outside activity in our house, and birds might actually get a piece then too :)
